Today would have been Mama's 73rd birthday! Lately, I've been sifting through old photos and notes and recipes. (I treasure her handwriting!) We were different (she wore bright colors and I wear black) and the same (very witty - ha ha). I realized two cords that tie us together: writing and cooking. #hbd #togetherwecanformaryanne #myhero #doogiehowser @nph #leukemiafighter #mamasgirl
Well....it finally happened. One of my #mdot races got postponed (and maybe even cancelled). Due to the 'Rona, Ironman Mt. Tremblant will not be held as originally planned. I am bummed because that probably puts my chances of reaching my #Kona legacy status in 2020 on hold for another year.
But, I am also grateful that I am healthy and can still train for whatever race is next. And I do believe there will be a next. I am keeping my fingers crossed for #IMPLACID and #IMMD! [I am also secretly proud of myself for being able to read the announcement about Tremblant in French!] #smrt

Limbo Akimbo. Taper teaches this. Limbo is betwixt and between. Akimbo is askew. Taper time is the period before a race where your training volume goes down so your race readiness goes up. This is the period when most athletes freak out. The extra time = stress and obsess and sometimes get the blues. Uncertainty over things we cannot control is what fills the hours during taper weeks. We fill it by constantly checking the weather and fretting about the swim start.
Right now, athletes are thinking: will they cancel my race? Won't they? How do I train for this? Do I train? What if they move my race to a date I can't make? If you can learn what to do now - how to handle what you can control mentally and emotionally, you'll have the taper blues mastered before your race season even begins.
Non-athletes: this uncertainty, this up and down, this one-day-they-say-this-and-the-next-day-they-say-that - this is how your favorite athletes feel going into their first or next race. Remember your anxiety. Empathize. Be kind.
I guess that goes for everyone. Remember we are all in this together, arms and legs akimbo, thoughts and emotions in limbo. Empathize. Be kind. Treat others as you need to be treated.

The Switch is a Witch. Brick workouts teach us this. It doesn't matter if you go from swim to bike or bike to run, switching to something new is a witch (or a word that rhymes with it). When you go from prone in the swim to upright or aero cycling, your body is going to protest. When you go from cycling to running - your brain and body might outright protest! In both cases, you settle into it, you forget the rhythm of the old and adapt to the beat of the new - until it's the new normal.
What are your BRICKS? Did your living room become a school or did your kitchen become the best diner in town? Each time I do a brick workout, I remember I'm laying the foundation for the next big race/challenge to come my way. I know that if I practice in the small things, my body, brain and attitude will remember for next time - and it will get a little easier.

Take Only What You Need. Transition areas teach us this. You don't need a hair dryer or lipstick in the swim-to-bike T1. You don't need a bucket to rinse your feet or chair to change your shoes in the bike-to-run T2. Keep It Simple Sweetie.
So, don't hoard toilet paper. Or diapers or hand sanitizer. Take what you need an move on.

The no-drafting rule teaches us this! In most #USAT sanctioned triathlons, cyclists are not allowed to draft off the rider in front. The general rule is there is an invisible zone about three bike lengths between you and the rider ahead of you. Once you enter that zone, you have 15 seconds to pass the athlete.
A race director I know would say: keep a Tahoe-sized vehicle between you and the rider in front. It's a good rule for our social distancing now! 🚲

I will tell you one secret about #IMCozumel : I didn't look at my swim, bike or run splits or my overall time until January (when I ordered these pictures). I had an idea of what my swim was, but after that I avoided looking at my #garmin or #trainingpeaks or #strava. I didn't want to know. I wanted to enjoy the fact that I had done an @ironmantri - that I had done THREE in one year. That I am one step closer (three races away) from Kona. I wanted to enjoy the fact that I swam, biked and ran the best I could that day.
I am one of those athletes with the tendency to beat myself up for missed time goals. The process can be perfect and I can completely enjoy and rock out the day, but my competitiveness will compare myself to past times or other athletes.
So, I enjoyed not knowing. For two months, I told stories about ghost crabs and sunburn and the finish line disco ball. I relived all my favorite moments without the lingering thought in the back of my mind of: you could have done better. And because of that, I did do better.

Naturally, the finish of #IMCozumel was the BEST part. I remember coming into the chute and hearing Ace and Jeyo yelling. I remember the GIANT disco ball that cast a zillion sparkly lights onto the red carpet. I remember thinking: I'll do the Ironman Hustle when I get to the line. And then, you know that part in the movies where everything blurs out around you and the lights are blinding and you can't hear a thing? That's when the inner voice has never been louder or quieter and it says: YES.

The best part of the day in #IMCozumel was seeing Ace. I think I mentioned before that he was everywhere. Of course, I don't have a picture of him, but he was near the finish line on the run so I got to see him lots. He was there to encourage, push and cheer. He made signs that said: One Step Closer to Kona! and Full-Circle x 3 (for the three loops on the run course). He had peeked into my calendar at my favorite motivational quotes and had written THE POWER OF NOW on a poster. It fit perfectly with my mantra of dontthinkjustrun. He was there at the start and the finish and I am so grateful for him!
The #IMCozumel run course was so quirky. There were so many details that I loved about this fairly short 3-loop course. I loved downtown - there were swallows imprinted on the street cobblestones out to the lighthouse. There was a drum line that started up on my second loop and stayed out til I arrived at the finish. There were GIANT bats swooshing overhead and there was a dead snake in the road. I learned that I react well to music on the course and Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes at Senor Frogs makes me run FAST!
My biggest, quirkiest memory is that there was a HUGE ghost crab that crossed the street in front of me on the last lap and I pointed at it and said to the guy running up behind me "Watch out for the crab". He kicked it - accidentally! The crab flew about 10 feet ahead of us, righted itself and scurried to the lane below us - into oncoming run traffic. The other runners noticed and side-stepped it as it ran for the waves!
