OMG It’s a bear! Jen said it in a low and steady voice and sat up slowly. Sure enough, about 100 yards up the road there was a bear ambling across the road! He paused to look at us as we slowed to look at him. Then he kept moving. By the time we reached the spot where he crossed, he had disappeared into the green trees and brush.
Twelve miles into our ride on Monday, we found our unicorn. Except, instead of a unicorn it was a black bear on a shady road in Pender County. We had traveled all the way to Alaska expecting to see a bear in the wild and here we were — 45 minutes from home — and one lumbers across our path. We were ecstatic.
That’s it! We can go home now! I exclaimed. That made the entire ride.
That made the entire SEASON, Jen said.
It’s true. I can’t even begin to tell you how obsessed we’ve been with bears.
